Twinkles win back-to-back International All-Levels Championships
There are so many meanings to the word “twinkle”. Whether referring to a “twinkle” in someone’s eye, or a little star “up above the world so high”, it always represents something magical!
In the city of Hamden, Connecticut, the “Twinkles” come in the form of pint-sized cheerleaders, who, over the past year, have been creating a lot of magic of their own for their families, their fans, their community, and the multiple charities they take part in. The 2009/10 CT Spirit All-Star Twinkles consisted of nineteen girls and one boy, ranging from 6 – 9 years of age. They practiced, tirelessly, 4 ½ hours per week to be the best they could possibly be. Through all of their hard work practicing, travelling to competitions, monthly team bonding, fundraisers, and other events, this little Spirit team developed into quite the cheer family.
Their hard work definitely paid off, as the Twinkles brought home five National Championship titles and 3 Regional championships from their 2009-10 season. To accompany those titles, the Twinkles also earned themselves two Grand Champion awards, defeating opposing Level One teams across all age groups. This is quite an accomplishment, not only because of the skills themselves, but also because of their age. This brings the Twinkles’ tally to eight 1st Place victories over the season, with a Best Stunting award to boot! Last May, the Twinkles came home from the International All Levels Championship (IALC) as Mini Level 1 champions and later in the month, were announced International All Levels Grand Champion of all Mini Level One teams around the United States. This year they did it again, being crowned International champions in their division for the second year running!
Aside from all of these achievements, the Twinkles participated in a number of charity events. The Twinkles took part in a charity/fundraising event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, put on by Quinnipiac College that brought in over $7,000, and was also featured on the local news. The Twinkles even got some face time in the clip! In the fall of 2009, the Twinkles, along with their Spirit Zone siblings, the Jewels, participated in the annual New Haven “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk”. These two teams raised over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society. Most recently, the Twinkles donated a basket to raffle off at the event hosted by Spirit Zone, “Uniting for a Cause” to raise money for a local boy from a local gym, Champion Cheer, who was diagnosed with a rare, malignant brain tumor, called neuroblastoma. I’m happy to report that at this time, he is in remission and cancer-free.
Take it from me, the very proud mother of one of these little Twinkles, to watch them perform is simply MAGICAL!
